Women at Risk: Lack of Economic Mobility

Women encounter numerous obstacles that jeopardize their economic mobility. Our reproductive rights are under threat, impacting all facets of our lives. The absence of affordable daycare and paid parental leave, the ongoing pay gap, the limited access to resources and capital for women in business, and the prevalence of racism and sexism all create barriers to economic progress. And, far too many of us live in unsafe conditions.

Economic mobility, the ability to change one’s income or wealth over a lifetime or across generations, is crucial for determining one’s destiny. Unfortunately, many women are trapped in violent relationships because they lack the financial means to leave, especially if they have children. Those who are out of the workforce due to parenting, illness, or age often struggle to regain economic control, even with an education. For Black and brown women, these challenges are often more severe. This is not a victim mentality; it is a reality.

As a survivor of domestic violence, I understand this struggle firsthand. Calculating how to afford leaving my situation was a critical part of my decision-making process. Where would I go? Would I have to return home to my parents? Could I afford to live on my own in NYC? Many women do not survive this process or leave with only the clothes on their backs, as I did.

I was fortunate to find a job that provided me with security. Now, I am dedicated to helping women grow their businesses, particularly e-commerce businesses, to enhance their economic mobility.

A Path Forward: Women Supporting Women

I believe we can make a difference. It requires the support of women, by women. This can happen through voting, hiring other women, calling out inequity, and utilizing online resources. However, the most significant impact comes from putting our money in motion. This is why I founded Portelle.

Portelle aims to transform the financial landscape for women e-commerce founders by providing the support they need to build and grow their companies. Our curated marketplace exclusively features women-owned e-commerce businesses, offering artisan goods to consumers who want to support these ventures but lack an easy way to find them.

As part of our SaaS offering, we empower female entrepreneurs with cost-effective instructional

programs designed to fuel growth. Additionally, our customers receive cashback with every purchase, which they can either spend within Portelle or donate to a woman-focused nonprofit. At every opportunity, we make choices that support women, and it is free to join.

The Opportunity

Did you know that women start 1800 new businesses a day?

Did you know that women account for 85% of consumer spending?

Did you know that women deliver 35% higher returns on investment than male-led firms?

Despite these impressive statistics, the number one challenge women business owners face is a lack of access to funding. SmallBizTrends.com.

Given these facts, what can we do to bring about change? Is it even possible to make a difference?

Our greatest resource is other women. That is why Portelle will be a community of women, women-owned businesses, and consumers. The Port is our community chronicle where we share the stories and journeys of women in business.

While our focus is on e-commerce women-owned businesses and those aspiring to create one, we believe we can be part of a larger ecosystem that supports women and their dreams, paving the way for more security and opportunity for all women.

Together, we can make a difference. Let’s put our money in motion and support each other to create a better future for all women.
