A kindergartener is a hero for calling 9-1-1 after hearing a loud “thump”—which was his grandma falling down while she was babysitting him.
On November 4, James Garcia was home with his grandma Rosa, and as James told NBC affiliate WESH, “I heard a bumping sound and that was my grandma falling.” It turns out she was having a medical emergency.
He knew exactly what to do. James grabbed a phone and dialed 9-1-1—and everyone who was on the rescue team commented on how he was so calm and brave, per WESH.
When he called 9-1-1, he said, “I don’t know what’s happening to my grandma … I’m scared,” according to WESH.
Nicholas Wilson was the first person at the door from the rescue team, and he said he was surprised to see a little man. “They said there was somebody there helping grandma … I didn’t realize he was so young,” he told WESH.
He told the news outlet that this incident proves how much education matters. “Keep listening to us when we come to schools and stuff because it proves that paying attention and listening works. He saved his grandma’s life,” he said.
For his quick-thinking and his bravery James received the Young Hero Award from Orange County Fire Rescue. When asked what he wants to do when he grows up, James said he wants to be a firefighter. And he is definitely well on his way toward achieving that dream.
His grandma told WESH, “If I loved him before, you have no idea how much I do now.”
Grandma Rosa told FOX affiliate WOFL, “I love my whole family, but the number one is him.”
