The pursuit of higher education doesn’t have to break the bank. In an era where online learning is increasingly recognized and respected, obtaining an affordable bachelor’s degree online has never been more accessible.

A new study by university ranking site Research.com analyzed the top 10 most affordable online bachelor’s degrees in the U.S. based on the cost per credit both in-state and out-of-state. Here they are below:

  1. University of Florida (UF)

An online BA from the University of Florida comes in at a cost of $112 per credit for in-state students or $150 per credit for out-of-state students. UF is a top-ranked public university offering a wide range of bachelor’s degrees, including popular majors such as business administration and computer science, or more unique choices like sports management, tourism, event management and hospitality.

  1. Winston-Salem State University (WSSU)

Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) ranks at $131.90 for in-state students and $461.08 for out-of-state students. WSSU offers affordable online bachelor’s options in fields such as clinical laboratory science, nursing (RN-BSN) and birth-to-kindergarten education. WSSU’s strong focus on research and social justice makes it a unique choice for those wanting to study online. 

  1. Great Basin College (GBC)

At a cost of $117.05 per credit (in-state) or $172 (out-of-state), Great Basin College (GBC) ranks third for the most affordable online program. Located in rural Nevada, GBC offers online degrees that focus on practical skills. These majors include English, social science, nursing, digital information technology, land surveying/geomatics, an array of applied science degrees and more.

  1. Brigham Young University-Idaho (BYU-Idaho)

The Utah-based university’s Idaho branch, Brigham Young University-Idaho, is another fantastic option for those wanting to save money on their education, with credits at $125 for in-state and $156 for out-of-state students. BYU-Idaho also offers a unique pathway program designed for adult learners. It combines certificates and an associate’s degree before progressing to a BA. The online university offers discounted tuition fees for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and offers degrees such as applied business management, applied communication, applied health and applied technology.  

  1. Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW)

Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) places fifth at a cost of $169.33 per credit for all online students. GSW is known for its flexible scheduling and focus on adult learners. It offers budget-friendly online bachelor’s degrees in business administration (with concentrations in accounting, management, marketing and human resources) and criminal justice.  

  1. Fort Hays State University (FHSU)

Fort Hays State University (FHSU) is a comprehensive university with many affordable online bachelor’s programs, including degree options in business administration, education, health studies and technology, along with more niche degrees like agricultural business and medical diagnostic imaging. They have a fixed rate of $226.88 per credit for their online students.

  1. Oregon Institute of Technology (Oregon Tech)

The seventh most affordable university is Oregon Institute of Technology (Oregon Tech), with a cost of $281 per credit for all students. Specializing in applied sciences and technical subjects, Oregon Tech offers affordable online bachelor’s degrees in applied psychology, business management, health care management, health informatics, information technology and operations management.  

  1. American Public University (APU)

A great school for military veterans, American Public University (APU) only charges $285 per credit and has a vast selection of online bachelor’s degrees. This designated “military-friendly” university offers courses in popular areas of study such as business, criminal justice, cybersecurity, data science, electrical engineering, emergency management, health sciences and homeland security.

  1. Thomas Edison State University (TESU)

Thomas Edison State University (TESU) charges $399 for in-state students and $519 for out-of-state students. Geared towards adult learners, TESU offers over 30 affordable online bachelor’s programs in arts, science and business administration. Programs also include unique specializations like nuclear energy engineering technology and radiation protection/health physics.  

  1. Western Governors University (WGU)

Rounding off the list is Western Governors University (WGU), with a flat rate cost of $3,475 for a six-month term. WGU is a competency-based online university with a unique approach to learning and affordable tuition. It offers a wide range of bachelor’s degrees, including business, IT, nursing and education. WGU’s flexible, self-paced model allows students to accelerate their studies and graduate faster.
