The Ordinary Is Having A Sale & This Is What A Beauty Editor Would Buy

Gearing up for Black Friday on the 29th of November? It’s hard not to be swayed by heavy discounts and total bargains, especially when it comes to beauty. After all, it’s the perfect opportunity to take a chance on a new product you’ve always wanted to try, or to stock up on all of your beauty essentials. But every year, one big-name brand makes a case of opting out of the furore entirely: DECIEM.

The DECIEM umbrella boasts brands like Niod and, of course, The Ordinary. This month, DECIEM is offering a 23% discount across all of its products for the whole of November to encourage skincare fans to shop slowly and mindfully — and we have a feeling The Ordinary products will be the most popular.

So what’s really worth your money? From exfoliating acids to hydrating serums, click through to shop the skincare products that come highly recommended by longtime fans of The Ordinary, team R29.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion, $12.10 $9.32

If you experience breakouts and skin staining left behind by spots, try this milky serum. Recommended to me by a top London dermatologist, it unclogs pores, minimizes hyperpigmentation and smooths rough skin texture without the typical irritation that most retinol products can cause, such as sore, flaky skin. It’s a product I go back to time and time again. Just remember to use SPF in the daytime, as retinoids can make skin sensitive to sunlight.

The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + HA, $9.20 $7.08

Acid-based serums are replacing leave-on exfoliating toners, and this one always gets my vote. Lactic acid is a little gentler than glycolic acid but both are AHAs (or alpha hydroxy acids), which exfoliate the surface of the skin, making it radiant and more even in tone. This particular serum contains 10% lactic acid. Used every other evening (and followed by moisturizer), it makes skin glow. If you’re an acid beginner, pick up the 5% version instead, as it’s a little kinder on skin.

The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + HA, $, available at The Ordinary

The Ordinary Multi-Peptide + Copper Peptides 1% Serum, $32 $24.64

For The Ordinary’s CEO, Nicola Kilner, this is an unsung hero, and I agree. “It’s one of those products that has everything in it and it’s something I won’t leave the house without applying first,” Kilner told R29. She continued: “There’s so many different peptides in there, and they are really focused on long-term skin health.” Peptides are essentially proteins, which repair and heal skin prone to redness and inflammation.

The Ordinary Multi-Peptide + Copper Peptides 1% Serum, $, available at The Ordinary

The Ordinary Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3%, $10.40 $8.01

Everyone’s talking about the power of the antioxidant ingredient ferulic acid, which shields against pollution and other environmental factors that can make skin dull. This is a little thicker in texture compared to other serums but it moisturizes skin well and sits perfectly under sunscreen. If you’re a city dweller and want to bolster your skin’s protection, this is great.

The Ordinary Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3%, $, available at The Ordinary

The Ordinary 100% Niacinamide Powder, $6.40 $4.93

The Ordinary’s Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% serum, $6 $4.62, is constantly selling out, but I much prefer the powdered version for almost instantly visible results. Mix a quarter of the provided teaspoon with a water-based moisturizer (I like Murad Clarifying Oil-Free Water Gel, $88.20) and massage into the skin. It reduces excess oil (my T-zone is always much less shiny at the end of the day), subsequently reducing breakouts, and minimizes the appearance of pores. Don’t worry, the formula isn’t gritty or chalky in the slightest.

The Ordinary 100% Niacinamide Powder, $, available at The Ordinary

The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser, $10.50 $8.08

If you’re a fan of CeraVe’s Hydrating Cleanser, $13.68, you’ll love this. Most squalane products appear in oil form but this is a cream cleanser and is particularly good for dry or sensitive skin. It removes light makeup and oil while moisturizing skin at the same time. My only gripe is that it runs out quickly, so stock up.

The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser, $, available at The Ordinary

The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA, $6.70 $5.16

This is a no-frills moisturizer best suited to reactive or spot-prone types. The star ingredient is hyaluronic acid. While it won’t totally transform your skin, it will leave it soft, supple and hydrated, and makes for a good makeup primer.

The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA, $, available at The Ordinary

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (Original Formulation), $6 $4.62

R29 beauty contributor Ellen King swears by this serum to keep her skin in check. Hyaluronic acid hydrates skin, plumping out fine lines and doing away with any uncomfortable tight feeling after cleansing. Vitamin B5 works in a similar way and attracts moisture. Hydrated, moisturized skin = glowing skin. Ellen applies this to damp skin for best results and suggests following with a moisturizer to lock everything in.

The Ordinary Mandelic Acid 10% + HA, $7.80 $6.01

The multiple five-star reviews speak for themselves. Mandelic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (or AHA) which is kinder on skin compared to other acids under the same umbrella, so it is suited to all skin types. Like glycolic acid serums, this version exfoliates the surface of the skin, making it appear brighter and clearer.

Wearing SPF during the daytime will protect your skin from the sun, as acids can cause sensitivity.

The Ordinary Mandelic Acid 10% + HA, $, available at The Ordinary

The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Masque, $13.80 $10.63

Blackheads and oily T-zones don’t stand a chance against this mask. Charcoal and clay mop up oil, while 2% salicylic acid breaks up the mixture of dead skin, oil and dirt, which eventually leads to clogged pores. A little goes a very long way and it’s pretty strong, so be sure to rinse off thoroughly after 10 minutes.

The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Masque, $, available at The Ordinary

The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Exfoliating Toner, $8.70 $6.70

You’ve probably heard skincare experts recommend glycolic acid for its multiple benefits when used safely at a relatively low percentage (such as 5% or 7%) once or twice weekly as part of an evening skincare routine. It’s a chemical exfoliator (derived from sugarcane) with a small molecular size, which makes it powerful and able to penetrate deep into the layers of your skin. It essentially works by ungluing dead skin cells from each other, working to resurface and smooth the skin. Over time, glycolic acid helps fade pigmentation and can improve rough skin texture

I like to swipe The Ordinary’s no-fuss version over my skin using a cotton pad once or twice weekly, after cleansing and before moisturizing to help minimize my acne scars. As it can make skin sensitive to sunlight, wearing SPF during the day is all the more important. And remember not to over-exfoliate, as this can break the skin barrier function and lead to irritation, dehydration and breakouts.

The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Exfoliating Toner, $, available at The Ordinary

The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane, $9.30 $7.16

If you’re not ready to graduate from retinol to retinal, but you’re ready for a little more than 0.2% or 0.5% retinol, this 1% formulation is for you. Not only will the slightly higher dose help to even skin tone, but the addition of squalane will help ward against any dryness that you otherwise might experience while staircasing to a higher strength.

As always, remember to use a high factor, broad spectrum sunscreen during the day.

The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane, $, available at The Ordinary

The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Lash and Brow Serum, $14.90 $11.47

At a fraction of the price of other lash serums on the market, this formula’s ingredients list isn’t too dissimilar to its luxury counterparts. You’ll spot a handful of familiar growth-enhancing peptides, as well as panthenol to strengthen hair and lock in moisture, and arginine (known to improve blood flow to the scalp), which is what hair needs to grow. The brand recommends eight weeks of twice-daily application (morning and evening) along the lash line and brows for the best results.

The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Lash and Brow Serum, $, available at The Ordinary

The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution, $9.50 $7.31

A viral sensation, this notoriously blood-red peeling solution brightens skin tone, smooths texture and eases congestion by tapping a cocktail of alpha hydroxy acids (glycolic, lactic, tartaric, citric) and beta-hydroxy acids (salicylic acid), along with antioxidants, hyaluronic acid and pro-vitamin B5 to hydrate and help ease irritation. But the formula is not for the faint of heart. I only recommend this to seasoned acid users, and be sure to follow with lots of hydrating formulas to keep your skin barrier in check. Oh, and don’t apply it to active spots — it’ll hurt.

The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution, $, available at The Ordinary

The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%, $12.20 $9.39

Using azelaic acid this formula gently works on stubborn patches of hyperpigmentation with a cushiony, rich, cream-like feel that dries to a demi-matte finish. It’s not as harsh as other acids on the market; azelaic acid can be gentle enough for daily use.

The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%, $, available at The Ordinary

The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2%, $8.10 $6.24

Because the vitamin C source (L-ascorbic acid) inside this milky lotion comes in a powder form, this formula feels slightly gritty at first. But the feeling is temporary. After a few minutes post-absorption, any leftover texture dissipates and you’re well on your way to brighter, more balanced skin. I’d recommend using this in the morning and diluting it with your moisturizer at first to allow your skin to build up a tolerance.
