14-Year-Old Named America’s Top Young Scientist for AI Invention

High school freshman Sirish Subash was named the grand prize winner of 3M’s Young Scientist Challenge—a competition that recognizes the innovations of middle school-aged children. In partnership with 3M mentor, Senior Research Engineer Aditya Banerji, Subash created a handheld AI pesticide detector called “Pestiscand.” The device is designed to measure various light wavelengths on fruits and vegetables and inform the user if their foods have pesticide residue on them. It currently works at an accuracy of over 85%, meeting the requirements for effectiveness and speed. Paul Skenes and Luis Gil are the MLB Rookies of the Year

MLB newcomers, Paul Skenes (left) and Luis Gil made history this last year as the Rookie of the Year for the National League and American League baseball teams respectively. Both pitchers, the two are the first pair of starting pitchers to win the Rookie of the Year title since 1981. Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Skenes debuted with the MLB in 2024 and finished his season at 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA, striking out 170 batters in 133 innings. Gil, who plays for the New York Yankees, debuted in 2021 making his comeback in 2024 after facing serious health problems.
