Shuo Wang, a trailblazing entrepreneur originally from Shenyang in China’s Liaoning province, has carved out a notable spot for herself as one of the U.S.’s richest self-made women.
At just 35, Wang has achieved extraordinary success in consumer technology and HR software. Her estimated net worth stands at $850 million, while her inclusion on the Hurun China Rich List puts her wealth at around 8.5 billion yuan ($1.2 billion). Now based in San Francisco, Wang has built a remarkable career, earning her spot among the world’s most influential business leaders.
From Humble Beginnings to MIT
Wang’s journey to success started when she moved from Shenyang to Baltimore, Maryland, at age 16. Her mother, a small business owner, was determined to provide better opportunities for Wang and brought her to the U.S. to join her grandparents. Even as a teenager, Wang sold scooters at flea markets through her mother’s import-export business, telling Forbes that this was her “first sales experience.” These early ventures helped cultivate her interest in business and entrepreneurship, setting a solid foundation for her future pursuits.
She went on to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she pursued a degree in mechanical engineering and began connecting with other aspiring entrepreneurs in the technology sector, including several of her future business partners.
Building Aeris Cleantec
Upon graduation, Wang’s first major entrepreneurial effort was Aeris Cleantec, which she co-founded with MIT classmate Pierre Bi. The Beijing-based company specialized in air purifiers, responding to the growing global need for clean air solutions. With Wang’s engineering knowledge and focus on robotics, she helped create products that stood out in a competitive market. Aeris Cleantec’s success was solidified when Massachusetts-based iRobot acquired the company in 2021 for around $100 million. The sale was a turning point for Shuo, both financially and in reputation as an innovator and business leader.
Scaling Up with Deel
Although Aeris Cleantec provided Wang with her first big breakthrough, her next venture, Deel, would propel her career even further. In 2019, Shuo co-founded Deel with another MIT alum, Alex Bouaziz. Deel’s goal was to streamline global hiring, allowing companies to manage payroll, compliance and HR functions for international employees through a single platform. This mission resonated strongly in the post-pandemic era as companies increasingly embraced remote work. Deel quickly became a pivotal tool for businesses seeking to hire global talent with ease.
Wang, as Deel’s chief revenue officer, played a crucial role in the company’s rapid growth. In just a few years, Deel reached a valuation of $12 billion in 2022, marking a significant achievement for the young company. Although the tech market’s ups and downs have brought Deel’s valuation to an estimated $7 billion recently, its impact remains profound. In March 2024, Deel exceeded $500 million in annual revenue, highlighting Wang’s ability to drive revenue and meet evolving market needs.
A Legacy of Innovation & Perseverance
Wang’s success story is one of resilience, adaptability and vision. Her early experiences selling scooters and her engineering education prepared her for a career defined by innovation and impact. From air purification to global hiring, Wang has consistently identified challenges and developed solutions that address real-world issues, all while building a personal fortune that continues to grow. Her achievements underscore a new era in entrepreneurship, where young leaders from diverse backgrounds are breaking into historically male-dominated spaces and making substantial, positive changes.
Now a resident of San Francisco, Wang exemplifies the spirit of a new generation of business leaders who prioritize sustainability, innovation and inclusion. Her work has made her a role model for aspiring entrepreneurs worldwide, particularly women
