Can we all just take a moment to stan Selena Gomez and her body-positive attitude? Under capitalism and the patriarchy, women are constantly bombarded with messaging telling us we cannot age or change over time. But Selena posted photos on her Instagram stories unapologetically embracing and loving her body, even though it has aged and changed, and you just love to see it. This is the kind of messaging we all need to see more of.
The 31-year-old Only Murders in the Building star first posted a throwback photo of herself in her 20s, wearing a tiny bikini next to a pool.
She wrote over the photo, “Today, I realized I will never look like this again.”
Yeah, obviously, because that was 10 years ago! Those days are long past, and that’s completely OK!
On the next slide, she shared a photo of herself in a bathing suit today, in her 30s. She still looks absolutely beautiful, but she looks more grown up. Her body has changed because 10 years have passed between the two photos, and time causes our bodies to look different. That’s just a simple fact.
“I’m not perfect but I am proud to be who I am,” Gomez wrote over the current photo. “Sometimes, I forget it’s OK to be me.”
We all forget that sometimes, but this post is a great reminder. Bodies are just bodies. They carry us through life and they don’t have any inherent value because they do or don’t look a certain way. They just are as they are.
Gomez made the post after confirming that she’s signed on to reprise her role as Alex Russo in Disney’s sequel series to The Wizards of Waverly Place, the show that launched her to stardom as a teen. Last week, the principal cast from the original show confirmed the sequel and that they all planned to return. We’re excited to see Gomez return to her roots — but with more experience and wisdom that only age can bring. And, of course, she’s going to look stunning, because she’s still gorgeous, no matter what.
