Please, no, let’s not wear dresses over jeans again

Fashion is cyclical. Period. Trends are continuously recycled through generations, and many of them are improved upon from decades past. One trend that is not an improvement? The dress-over-jeans trend of the early 2000s.

Not even Katie Holmes can change that. Sorry not sorry. Who wants to look like they have a three-foot torso with 8-inch legs? Not moi, that’s for sure.

Holmes debuted the once-popular Y2K look at the iHeart Radio Jingle Ball earlier this week. Almost as soon as photos of the actress and mom hit the internet, everyone had something to say about it. Because let’s be honest, we all partook in fashion and beauty trends once upon a time that now make us cringe. Big time.

In response to the, well, massive response to the look, Holmes’ stylist tells The New York Times that the decision to pair the dress with jeans was intentional and functional.

“We decided the rich color and subtle bustier effect detailing of the top was elegant and would be fun if paired with jeans, creating a more youthful feel for Jingle Ball and the atmosphere there,” Brie Welch, Holmes’ personal stylist said.

“On the day of (and because Katie has her own effortless style that should be appreciated here), she said she wanted to wear sneakers, because it was a concert and obviously there would be a lot of dancing to Dua Lipa (and nothing is more comfortable!)” her stylist continued.

What’s really funny is when the photos first began circulating, many people—myself included—thought it was an old photo of Katie Holmes. Like, circa 2005ish old. But alas, we were all wrong!

Others pointed to some other…trends…that this look could open the floodgates for.

And here’s an excellent point about Gen Z and their obsession with the ’90s and early ’00s fashion.

We can let this one slide. Rich, famous people try to set trends all the time and, more often than not, end up missing. By a mile. And because Katie Holmes is gorgeous, she can get away with a lot more than the average bear.

But the second skinny scarves, chain belts, double denim, those ballet flats everyone had, and jeans so low you have to shave to wear them in public all come back? Well, I’m hibernating in my 50 pairs of black leggings until it passes.
