Labor drugs cause mom to hilariously misspell daughter’s name on birth certificate

When Gabrielle Mayor, now 15 years old, was born, she was 10 days past her due date. Her mom, Ellyn Mayor, understandably ready to get that baby outta there, had been given a cocktail of medications to induce labor and speed things along. When Gabrielle finally made her entrance into the world, the labor drugs had a hilarious effect that wouldn’t reveal itself until years later.

“I was shaking so badly that my G must have looked like a B,” Ellyn told Today. “After I got the birth certificate in the mail, I immediately fixed it, but for some reason I didn’t think about the social security card … until I took Gabby for her learner’s permit.”

It was this year, when 15-year-old Gabrielle tried to apply for her learner’s permit, that she realized she’s been going by the wrong name for her entire life.

“The guy asks for my social security number and I give it to him. He puts it in the computer, and he’s like, ‘I’m not seeing a Gabrielle Mayor,’” she said. “Then he goes, ‘I do have a Babrielle Mayor.’”

At that point, Ellyn figured out what was going on. She gasped and said, “Oh, no.”

“I’m like, ‘What do you mean, ‘Oh, no?” Gabrielle said.

It turns out, this kind of thing isn’t even that unusual. Gabrielle shared the hilarious story on TikTok, where other people flooded the comments with stories of their own name misspellings on official documents.

“my name was aslhey instead of ashley for 20 years,” one person wrote.

Another added, “My friends name is technically Bethang, not Bethany.”

As for Gabrielle, everything worked out in the end. Her social security card was corrected and she was able to get her learner’s permit a couple weeks later than planned.

“I was really upset in the moment, but now it’s my fun fact,” she said.
