How Black-owned hair care brands are taking over in 2021

In 2020, Black consumers spent $1.7 billion on hair care from Black-owned brands which has emphasized the public need for curly hair products and services. Black women have created formulas to enhance curls, kinks, braids, and more. As Jackson points out, brand expansion for Black entrepreneurs is difficult to achieve because many Black-owned businesses feel the pressure to sell their establishments to parent companies. Black-owned brand have received more attention and support within the past year which has given many business owners hope for expansion and product development.

According to the Vogue Business (2021), “The US Black haircare market has offered significant potential for the Black business community dating back to the days of Madam C.J. Walker, the first female self-made millionaire who created a line of Afro-American hair products in the early 20th century, and George E. Johnson, who founded Johnson Products Company, the first Black-owned company to enter the US Stock Exchange in 1971.” As we proceed through 2021, more Black-owned hair brands such as Alikay Naturals and Camille Rose, are receiving the recognition they deserve for enhancing the Black woman hair routine process.
