Foundation with SPF: feel the glow with these 6 favorites

Alright ladies, the clouds are (mostly) gone and the sun is making a bright and sizzling comeback. Put away your bulky winter moisturizer and make space on the counter for the best foundation with SPF.

We’ve rounded up picks that are great for all of your summer needs. Whether you’re looking for higher coverage for summer weddings or something lighter for family vacations, check out these awesome foundations that will protect your skin from those nasty UVB rays and give you a nice glow.

Does foundation with SPF work?

SPF stands for sun protection factor. Any product that contains SPF means that there is a certain amount of protection for your skin. Foundations with SPF come in a range of protections, from SPF 15 to SPF 50. The general recommendation is to choose skincare and makeup products containing SPF 30 but, if you can go higher that’s great too. The higher the concentration, the more protection you’re ultimately getting.

But, one of the main factors that determines if SPF works is if you reapply it throughout the day. Since most of us aren’t reapplying foundation three times a day (I hope) then, it only makes sense to rely on more than one product to protect your skin. Layering a moisturizer with SPF or a sunscreen for your face will give you that extra boost. SPF only protects from UVB rays and only products with “broad spectrum” protect against UVA as well.

Scroll through for Team Motherly’s recommendations for the best foundation with SPF and get ready to add to your cart because warmer weather is finally here.

6 of the best foundations with SPF

Ilia

$48

Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40

I finally found my holy grail of foundation with SPF: Ilia’s Super Serum Skin Tint with SPF 40. With two young kids, I maybe get 3 minutes alone in the morning to get ready (if I’m lucky) and with Ilia’s Super Serum Skin Tint I can actually get meeting-ready, sometimes with time to spare. I love that you apply it to clean skin—no need to even moisturize beforehand! Simply apply about a quarter size drop and apply it like a serum. It does take a couple of minutes to set and you’ll be able to see the formula adjust to your skin tone after application. The Skin Tint provides a dewy finish and light coverage, though I personally think the coverage is enough to last me through a day’s worth of video calls. And, its SPF and skincare ingredients are just the cherry on top. —Erin Lem, VP Content Strategy

Daybird

$39.50

Tinted Skincare

For days that I’d like very light coverage with full SPF benefits, I reach for Daybird’s Tinted Skincare with SPF 50. Like Ilia’s Skin Tint, Daybird is also non-comedogenic and features skincare ingredients like Niacinamide. Daybird’s vegan formula is thicker and goes less like a traditional serum so I suggest moisturizing your face before applying. I love that I know I’ll get full sun protection while also enjoying light coverage to boot. —Erin Lem, VP Content Strategy

MDSolarSciences

$40

MD Mineral BB Crème SPF 50

I’ve never been a full face makeup person, so once I discovered the wonders of this bb cream, it became my daily go-to. The dermatologist-developed formula is  The super silky tinted formula glides on easy and diffuses whatever redness/funkiness my skin has going on thanks to an infusion of caffeine and niacinamide.

Tula

$40

radiant skin brightening serum skin tint sunscreen broad spectrum SPF 30

I don’t wear foundation regularly, but this is my go-to when I have somewhere to be that’s not a formal, full-face of makeup event. It’s super lightweight but gives just enough coverage to even out my tone and hide my sun damage while preventing more damage with SPF 30 baked in. Jen Watro, Head of Audience Development

it COSMETICS

$44

CC+ Cream Full-Coverage Foundation with SPF 50+

This cult favorite is the, self-proclaimed, #1 SPF Foundation in America for a reason. Personally, we love the idea of SPF 50+ because the higher that number is the better off your skin will be. Not only is it color-correcting but it also contains anti-aging properties and a hydrating ingredients.

Supergoop!

$44

CC Screen 100% Mineral CC Cream SPF 50

This has been my go-to for years. The formula is a little thick so I cut it with my moisturizer to get just the right consistency, especially when I want a more full-coverage look. It’s easily buildable and gives me that “no-makeup, makeup look.” If all I need is a little coverage then a pea-sized amount over my moisturizer does the trick.
