Drew Barrymore gets real about not having motherhood ‘figured out’ and moms feel seen

The different stages of motherhood come with their own set of challenges and wins. Plus, the (seemingly) never-ending wave of hormones might just make you feel like your cup is constantly draining and filling.

Even though it may seem like other moms, especially celebrity moms, have it all together, Drew Barrymore is setting the record straight. In a new TikTok video, Barrymore discusses how motherhood is not something she has “figured out.”

Don’t worry, I got them McDonald’s! @chicksintheoffice

The clip, which is from Barrymore’s recent appearance on the podcast, “Chicks in the office,” starts with Barrymore explaining something that’s all too real, “The girls really wanted McDonalds the other night, they hadn’t had it in a while. I was ordering it too often.”

Barrymore co-parents her daughters, Olive, 10, and Frankie, 8, with ex-husband, Will Kopelman.

“All those parents who have it all together,” she continues, “And they’ve got hygiene and nutrition and schedules and boundaries, God bless you. I didn’t know any of that stuff when I had my kids. I did not have the blueprint and I felt like a failure a lot. I felt really overwhelmed and like I don’t know what I’m doing, and, you know, I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m gonna have to learn on the job.”

There are plenty of classes for moms to take, from birth classes to dealing with a picky eater, but when it’s just you and your baby all alone in your nursery room you might catch yourself thinking, “Am I doing this right?” So, it’s so refreshing to see a celebrity mom talk about motherhood in this way. So often all we see on social media are “perfect moms” who magically have it all together in front of the camera.

Barrymore also talks about how her parenting has changed as her daughters have grown older. “I was so unforgiving of myself when my kids were younger and now that they’re almost 9 and Olive’s like 10, it’s shifted into something very different,” she says. “And I’m having the best time ever. I’ve learned boundaries.”

Moms on TikTok have been posting supportive comments since Barrymore posted the video:

“Wow I’m about to cry!! These are all the things I feeling right now as a mom to a 3 and 2 year old

“Loved you before but love you even more now with this talk show platform. Gotten to know you on a whole other level and it’s refreshing how real u r”

“You are so real, That’s refreshing

“I love this woman. She is so relatable and comforting.”

“Drew is literally like a best friend who doesn’t know I exist. Ugh. As a hot mess toddler Mom I really appreciate this coming up today”

“Love this. There is no perfect parent. You are amazing”
