At the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, Christina Applegate showed up looking absolutely fabulous with her 12-year-old daughter, Sadie, by her side. The best part of her ensemble? Her cane, which she had adorned to read “FU MS,” as she walked the red carpet.
Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021, this is one of a few public appearances Applegate has taken part in since her diagnosis. Last year, she earned her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and talked about her life with the disease during the last few years and how she finished her popular Netflix series, “Dead To Me,” while battling it.
“People are going to see me for the first time as a disabled person,” she said at the time, “and it’s very difficult.”

Upon hearing of her medical diagnosis, the showrunners proposed “calling the plug,” but Applegate was determined to carry on.
“But I was like, ‘No, no, no, no, no, no: We have to finish this story. It’s too important to our hearts; too important to our souls,’” she said. “So, if that meant me having to take a break in the middle of the day so I could go sleep—or me just leaving because I couldn’t do anymore—then that’s what we had to do.”
While getting her star, she thanked her husband and her daughter.
“The most important person in this world is my daughter,” said Applegate. “You are so much more than even you know. You are so beautiful and kind and loving and smart and interesting.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, MS is a potentially disabling disease of the brain and central nervous system. When someone has MS, their immune system causes communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body. Eventually, the disease can cause permanent damage or deterioration of the nerves. While signs and symptoms of MS vary widely from person to person, as well as the amount of nerve damage and affected nerves. Some people with MS may lose the ability to walk independently or at all, and others can experience long periods of remission without any new symptoms.
Before Sunday’s SAG Awards, Applegate said she might be taking a step back from acting in front of the camera soon.

“Right now, I couldn’t imagine getting up at 5 a.m. and spending 12 to 14 hours on a set,” she told the Los Angeles Times earlier this month. “I don’t have that in me at this moment.”
She also said the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards could be her “last awards show as an actor, probably,” adding that she thought it was “kind of a big deal.”
Christina Applegate was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for her work on the third and final season of “Dead To Me,” which premiered on Netflix in November 2022.
