The use of cannabis has become more normalized in the last decade, compared to any other in the past. This is a controversial topic as this industry capitalizes on a medicine that has negatively affected Black and Brown communities. 88% of the 8.2 million drug related arrests from 2001 to 2010 are solely for an individual having marijuana on them. As the marijuana plant becomes more obtainable in the public atmosphere, more dispensaries will continue to open.
According to Refinery29, “It seems the proverbial green rush is gaining momentum, and that Black cannabis entrepreneurs will finally get their due. But while this legislation is a step in a hopeful direction, there is still much to be done in making the cannabis industry more accessible to Black and brown folks. And it’s Black women in particular who are leading the charge to ensure this industry serves communities of color.” As this industry continues to grow in popularity, many will continue to fight for change and support those who have been affected by this system and industry the most.
