39 Spring Fashion Must-Haves, According To Refinery29 Editors

We’ve turned the clocks forward, the days are getting warmer, the sun is shining — spring is fully here. We’re starting to shed winter layers and storing away our cold-weather fashion to embrace the best of spring style.

When it comes to approaching spring fashion, we toe the transitional-dressing line. It’s not quite yet hot enough for T-shirts and shorts, but putting together a functional outfit that will keep you comfortable as temperatures change throughout the day can be quite the challenge. No one wants to be running around lugging around a bulky leather jacket that you only needed for an hour this morning.

Thankfully, the Refinery29 team is here to help. We’ve already been digging through our closets (and the shopping aisles) for our spring fashion essentials, including trendy barrel-leg jeans, eclectic tights, versatile blazers, and so much more. We’ve also started to look ahead to summer and kick-start swimsuit and sandal shopping. Scroll on to discover some of the team’s spring must-haves.

The Frankie Shop Hayla Denim Pants

“These jeans are hands down the item that has gotten the most wear out of all my 2024 purchases. After seeing the then-sold-out contrast pair on my colorist and hair whisperer, IGK’s Liv Casanova, last year, I instantly added my email to the notification list; I have never bought anything faster than when I got a restock email a month later. Not only do these jeans create an cinched-waist effect thanks to the adjustable button waistband but they also dress up the simplest of tank tops, T-shirts, and sweaters with zero effort. I’ve worn them at least once a week since purchase, and have my eye on this white pair for summer. While the black-and-navy pair is sadly once again sold out, you can opt for the one-tone version of the same silhouette.” — Irina Grechko, Fashion Director

Lululemon Relaxed-Fit Twill Blazer

“I didn’t anticipate finding my new favorite blazer at Lululemon, but alas, it happened! This twill-blend blazer; part of the brand’s new travel assortment, fits like a dream (which can be tricky for petite girls like me), is breathable, comfortable, and pairs with everything from a silk midi skirt to relaxed trousers for a Lululemon take on traditional suiting. I can’t wait to wear it nonstop this spring and would never dare to gatekeep it.” — Karina Hoshikawa, Senior Writer

Aritzia Sunday Best Divine Pant

“A lightweight sweatpant alternative is hard to come by, but I think I’ve found my staple lounge-to-street option for the transitional spring season. I bought these wide-leg pants in both black and white from Artizia’s Sunday Best line. They make me feel slightly more put-together while working from home, and I find I can easily style them with flats or loafers so I don’t look like I’m walking into the coffee shop in my actual pajamas.” — Kate Spencer, Sr. Affiliate Partnerships Manager

Free People Carry All Bag

“This bag fits everything, and I’m talking everything: my work laptop, a book for the train, my gym clothes for post-work, lunch, and all the other useless bits I insist on carrying around every day. Even better, it slings over your body, which I think is a must when carrying a lot as heavy shoulder bags never stay on the shoulder, do they? Metallic colorways aren’t going anywhere, so this bronze number will keep me on trend in a functional way.” — Tanyel Mustafa, Senior Writer

FP Collection Slouchy Carryall, $, available at Free People

Aligne Mariah Curved Sleeve Hourglass Blazer

“For years I’ve worn oversized blazers – but Aligne’s curved sleeve hourglass style convinced me to switch things up. I love that it cinches in at the waist and curves over the thigh too. I decided to pair it with some ’80s-style Adidas tracksuit bottoms, chunky boots, and some classic Ray-Bans. And, of course, I added just a touch of leopard print courtesy of my Ganni bag.” — Susan Devaney, Lifestyle Director

Aligne Mariah Curved Sleeve Hourglass Blazer, $, available at Aligne

Skims Fit Everybody Cami Bodysuit

“I love a deep brown for spring (or really any season!). This is actually the first Skims product that I have owned and I love it. The bodysuit is so comfortable and soft that it almost feels like I’m not wearing anything at all and the double lining allows me, a bra-on-always gal, to go braless. It’s great that this bodysuit can go with everything, I mean I’ve worn it with everything, from slouchy jeans for walking my dog to a leather mini skirt for going out with my gals and it really works in all situations depending on what accessories and bottoms you pair it with.” — Becca Sax, Affiliate Coordinator

Adidas SL 72 Shoes

“Do these scream spring shoes or do these scream spring shoes? I have worn out my black Samba sneakers and for the new season, I’m thinking all about bright color palettes. This ’70s-style running shoe from Adidas is super slim, which makes it the perfect accessory to some big baggy jeans and a baby tee for the spring season. Plus the heel has a little bit more height than a tennis court shoe, which is ideal for my 5”3 frame.” — Alicia Lansom, Associate Editor

Sif Jakobs Santina Watch

“Ever since I broke up with my FitBit (the constant step-tracking was all-consuming) I have been looking for an everyday watch that is modern, stylish, and a natural extension of my jewelry collection. This timepiece from Danish jewelry brand Sif Jakobs caught my eye because of its mixed metals, which is perfect because I often alternate between silver and gold jewelry. I also love the touch of glamour in the tiny crystals on the watch face. Plus, its shape reminded me of the old Casio watch I loved as a teenager.” — Ebony-Renee Baker, Fashion Editor

Understated Leather Moon Glow Coat

“This is the coat of my dreams. My wildest, rock and roll-tinged, Almost Famous-watching, Daisy Jones and the Sixreading, and Stevie Nicks-listening dreams. I’ve had my heart set on it for over a year now, and I finally decided it was time to bite the bullet. I’ve only had it for a month but it’s already one of my most worn pieces, earning compliments left and right. You can best believe I’ll be wearing this to see Stevie in Hyde Park this summer at the British Summer Time festival!” — Esther Newman, Affiliate Writer

Maguire Barça Sandal Slide and Patent Flower Clip

“I’ve been gravitating toward chunky shoe styles for a while, but didn’t own a pair of everyday sandals so I was excited when I spotted these ones in person while window shopping in Montreal. Beyond the trendy Y2k style (it’s giving Lizzie McGuire), the leather is so buttery-soft and the insole is so cushy, making them comfortable for long walking days. I also fell in love with Maguire’s flower clip accessories for customization, so I carted up a white style for a unique, asymmetric look. I clip it on for leg-baring midi skirt outfits and easily unclasp it when I wear floor-grazing wide-leg jeans.” — Victoria Montalti, Associate Affiliate Writer

Lucy & Yak Cole Super Wide Leg Jeans

“It feels near impossible these days to find baggy jeans that are still high-waisted so when I came across these ones by Lucy & Yak, I was thrilled. Not only do they cinch nicely at the waist, elsewhere they’re roomy in all the right places while still remaining flattering. Made from 100% organic cotton and dyed with low-impact dyes, they’re sustainable and sure to last. The blue mid wash is also perfect for spring, as I tend to reach less for my darker denim in this season.” — Kristine Romano, Associate Editor, Photo & Design

Biko Large Nicola Studs

Silver jewelry has been making a comeback for a few years now — I wrote about it back in 2021 — and these rhodium-plated, made-in-Toronto chunky studs are my 2024 faves. They are bold without making my ears hurt and look exceptionally adorbs when paired with a twee bow.” — Carli Whitwell, Senior Director of Editorial

Hush Puppies Amelia Chelsea Boots

“I have always wanted black leather boots that wouldn’t get destroyed by the rain, and I finally managed to find the perfect pair in the Amelia by Hush Puppies. The Chelsea boot silhouette makes this a classic style that goes with everything, and the leather upper is water-resistant. I have worn them in heavy rain a couple of times now and found them to be so easy to clean. It’s a great shoe choice when you don’t want to commit to full-on wellie rain boots. There’s a waterproof lining to keep your feet dry, and the rubber lug soles are slip-resistant. The foamy insoles are comfortable to walk in, but I would recommend going one size up and wearing thick socks to add some extra bounce in your step.” — Venus Wong, Senior Travel Writer

Everlane The Way-High Curve Jean

“These past two years have seen some of the most exciting denim trends in recent memory, with the barrel-leg jean emerging as my personal favorite for the way it can be worn with everything from ballet flats to heels. I’ve been loving this casual pair from Everlane that I have worn with everything from sweatshirts and tees to blazers.” — Irina Grechko, Fashion Director

Everlane The Way-High® Curve Jean, $, available at Everlane

Baggu Cloud Carry-On

“This handbag is one of the hardest-working purchases I’ve made in a while. It’s durable, fits LOADS, and looks a lot less utilitarian than it actually is. I’ve used it for a three-day trip to Spain, a five-day trip to Berlin, and as an overnight bag with enough room for my gym kit, too. It’s also money-saving because it fits underneath the seat of most planes, which means I never have to check in a bag.” — Ebony-Renee Baker, Fashion Editor

Baggu Cloud Carry-on, $, available at Baggu

Savage x Fenty Signature Script Unlined Bra

“Okay, I may not be stepping out in just a sheer bra, but I will be embracing the 2024 sheer trend, and layering this style under flowy tops. Savage x Fenty makes some of my favorite bras, and this is the newest addition to my collection. I own this style in lavender, which is also a trending color for the spring, but am equally obsessed with the baby blue option. So far, I’ve worn it under a slightly sheer button-down crop top, but can also see myself wearing it under loose tops for a peekaboo moment.” — Victoria Montalti, Associate Affiliate Writer

Damson Madder Buon Appetito T-Shirt

“I love this top for casual days out and fittingly wore it on a date night last week over a big plate of food. It’s easy to style with just about anything: jeans, a midi skirt, shorts when the weather is warmer. It’s thicker than most tees I own, which is unsurprising for Damson Madder as the quality of their clothes always impresses me. It’s advertised as ‘shrunken,’ but my regular size fits just fine. A staple for me!” — Tanyel Mustafa, Senior Writer

FP Movement Quinn Quilted Puffer Vest

“I’m a big vest girl, especially during the transitional months when I start getting back into running. For spring, I wanted a vest that’s a little more girlie than a tech bro vest, and I love FP Movement’s Quinn quilted puffer! It comes in so many cute colors and has a cutesie scalloped edge detail. This will be perfect for jogging around Central Park or doing errands this spring. I would definitely size down; usually, I’m a size large, and I got a medium as it has an oversized fit and I didn’t want to look like I was swimming in the vest.” — Becca Sax, Affiliate Coordinator

Porto Mini Pouch in Nero

“I’m not much of a small purse girl, but I’ve recently been attending more dinners and evening events where I’ve found that a small clutch or shoulder bag is more appropriate and useful than my larger daytime tote. This beautiful leather pouch from Porto is buttery soft and handmade in Italy. I find the size is just right to fit some cards/cash, phone, keys, and lip gloss.” — Kate Spencer, Sr. Affiliate Partnerships Manager

Nyud Marilyn Top + Bottom

“I don’t want to tell you how much time I spent looking for a bikini for a recent birthday trip to Miami. But I’m happy I put in the work and purchased this two-piece from Nyud Swim in trendy chocolate brown. The top can be worn nine different ways (I’ll need a longer vacay to test them all!) and I love the high-waisted, very cheeky bottom. Also, not to sound like my mother, but the material, made of Italian Lycra, washes like a dream — on gentle cycle and laid flat to dry, of course.” — Carli Whitwell, Senior Director of Editorial

Nike V2K Run

“If you didn’t know by now, it’s the spring of tennis. Zendaya is making the sport cool again with her slew of Challengers press looks and I’m ready to take to the streets in a Sporty Spice-style all-white ensemble. While these Nike trainers might be made for running, to me, the neutral colorway (and perfectly cushioned sole) make me think of zipping about on a court to claim match point. Catch me styling these with a pleated skirt or a functional yet fashionable skort as soon as the sun comes out.” — Alicia Lansom, Associate Editor

Urban Renewal Remade Pleated Plaid Mini Skirt

“I just can’t get enough of plaid mini skirts: they make such a simple yet chic style statement when paired with knee-high boots or loafers. This flirty number is made from upcycled deadstock fabric, and I find it so cool that each skirt is completely one-of-a-kind. (You can pick the general color you want, but, because it’s vintage, you might get a different pattern from what is depicted on the website).” — Venus Wong, Senior Travel Writer

Leg Studio Brown Leopard Printed Tights

“I’ve loved funky tights since my Tumblr-blogging, twee days of teenagehood (lace layered over colored tights was my signature look). And so, I’ve been living for the current tight renaissance — they’re the quickest, easiest, and often cheapest way to update a look, and they keep you warm. My current fave is this leopard-print pair from ASOS that looks amazing with pops of red.” — Esther Newman, Affiliate Writer

Left On Friday Streamline Suit

“Swimsuit shopping season isn’t even here, and I already found my new favorite one-piece courtesy of Left on Friday, a swim and active lifestyle brand created by two former longtime Lululemon executives. Made from an incredibly comfortable fabric — that compresses without being too tight and feels ultra-luxurious on — the swimsuit additionally comes in this eye-catching Barbie pink color (that doesn’t turn sheer as soon as you step out of the water as is the case with many bright-hued swimsuits). Best part: The piece can double as a chic bodysuit (pictured here), or even a workout top thanks to its high-performance fabric.” — Irina Grechko, Fashion Director

Circus NY by Sam Edelman Isadora Strap Sandal

“I’m a big fan of Sam Edelman’s Circus NY shoes. I already owned the brand’s Miranda platform sandal in a funky orange-and-pink swirl print. The chunky sandals are so much more lightweight and comfortable than they look, so I decided to go ahead and purchase my next pair: the Isadora sandal. I opted for the metallic silver option because I needed a shoe for a disco-themed birthday party and also my Olivia Rodrigo Y2K-inspired concert outfit. But I’m also always in need of a going-out shoe in the spring when it’s no longer suitable to slip on my favorite booties and when flat sandals are just too casual. While these are metallic, they’re so versatile and easily dress up any spring outfit.” — Victoria Montalti, Associate Affiliate Writer

Kitri Daphne Red Tulip Print Maxi Slip Dress

“I haven’t always been comfortable in slip dresses—sometimes they just feel a little bit too much like pajamas for me—but this one is right up my alley. From the bright red hue to the subtle floral print and lace trim, this dress has me feeling ultra-feminine while still being suitable enough for work with a blazer or jacket on top.” — Ebony-Renee Baker, Fashion Editor

Merrell Women’s Moab Speed 2 X Sweaty Betty

“I adore mixing gold and silver metallics, and these trainers do just that. This limited-edition drop has my heart right now, and frankly, I’m gutted they aren’t permanent because I already know that when I eventually knacker them out I’m going to want another pair. Yes, they’re aesthetically stunning which is a big tick in my book, but I also rate Merrell for comfort and practicality. I never get blisters when breaking in a pair from them and these new kicks haven’t let me down on that front. They’re the perfect fit for my size 7.5 feet, and I’ll be wearing them all summer long.” — Tanyel Mustafa, Senior Writer

Coach Soho Bag In Repurposed Denim

“The denim Coach Soho Bag comes right on time with Beyoncé’s Country era, Ariana Grande’s indie-boho Eternal Sunshine vibes, and the patchwork denim trend. I love the bag’s three denim washes and really love that the fabric is unexpectedly soft. It’s small yet spacious enough to fit all my essentials and the strap is the perfect length to wear as a shoulder bag. I can see myself continuing to reach for the Soho bag to complement my denim-forward looks throughout the spring.” — Victoria Montalti, Associate Affiliate Writer

Damson Madder Leopard Cargo Dion Jeans

“I’ll admit, I’ve never seen myself as a leopard-print girl before, but these cargo trousers have changed my mind entirely. The relaxed fit, warm colorway, and embroidered pockets make these the cutest cargos I’ve ever seen. I’ll be wearing them with baggy skater tees and cute cardigans all spring long.” — Alicia Lansom, Associate Editor

Damson Madder Dion Jean – Leopard Cargo, $, available at Damson Madder

Alo Sherpa Ear Muffs

“I get head colds pretty easily, so whenever I’m out and about on a windy day (yes, even in the early weeks of spring), I put on these sherpa ear muffs to keep my head and ears covered. Furry ear muffs are coming back in style in a major way, thanks to the Y2K revival. I love how on-trend these cuddly ones are, with an adjustable band and noticeable-yet-understated Alo Yoga logo on the sides. I feel like a manga character when I have them on, and they make my entire ‘fit look much cuter.” — Venus Wong, Senior Travel Writer

Kallmeyer New York Léa Slim Blouse With Tie

“I’ve been following Kallmeyer for the past few seasons now, thanks to New York-based brand’s exquisite tailored separates. In particular, I had my eye on this shirt with a built-in tie that I finally invested in this winter. It’s the perfect piece for when you want to dress up your go-to jeans or pair with a suit for a menswear-inspired moment that’s trending right now. While the style is available in a few different colors, I love it in this mustard yellow — though the cream floral is a close second.” — Irina Grechko, Fashion Director

Kallmeyer New York Léa Slim Blouse with Tie, $, available at Kallmeyer New York

Barbour Catton Spey Patch Showerproof Jacket

“As soon as I saw this patchwork jacket from Barbour’s new collection, I was in love. While you can never go wrong with a classic trench, this quirky blend of showerproof denim, corduroy, and gingham offers the perfect mix of statement and practicality. For an oversized fit, I got the jacket one notch up from my regular size. Having only worn it a handful of times so far, I’ve gotten dozens of compliments.” — Ebony-Renee Baker, Fashion Editor

Barbour Catton Patch Showerproof Jacket, $, available at Shopbop

Stella Nova Black and Blue Jeans

“My fashion editor colleague Ebony recently told me I was on the cowboy trend in purchasing these jeans, unbeknownst to me. These were, quite frankly, an investment and I gave them a lot of thought before purchasing (six days of deliberation, to be exact). I’ve never spent so much money on a pair of jeans, but considering I’m in jeans most days I’m confident these will see me through years of wear. I like how they’re a statement in the mixed denim tones while still being subtle.” — Tanyel Mustafa, Senior Writer

Stella Nova Black And Blue Denim Jeans, $, available at Lewis Yates

New Balance 1906R Shoes

“Yes, I’m all about a statement boot in the wintertime, but my true calling are cushioned and comfortable kicks Thankfully, the spring season means I can venture out in white sneakers without the fear of destroying them in muddy snow, which is exactly why I’m so excited about this new crimson-and-sea salt 1906R pair. New Balance knows exactly what it’s doing when it comes to mesh running shoes, and this new colorway has got me so excited for the warmer weather ahead.” — Alicia Lansom, Associate Editor

New Balance 1906R, $, available at New Balance

Pandora ME Double Link Chain Necklace

“When I wrote my charm necklace building story, my mom saw it, ran with it, and gifted me one for my birthday — a Pandora charm necklace chain along with the brand’s Hamsa Hand charm — so that I could add my own charms and continue building my collection. I really like the two carabiner clasps for easily sliding on the charms and the dual chain style for a modern twist. I know I’m going to be reaching for this necklace all spring and summer long, and swap out my charms to complement every outfit.” — Victoria Montalti, Associate Affiliate Writer

PANDORA Pandora ME Double Link Chain Necklace, $, available at PANDORA

Veronica Beard The Goody Bag

“In February, Veronica Beard, a brand known for its Dickey Jackets and denim, debuted handbags made up of seven silhouettes in a range of sizes and colorways. I’ve been wanting a bucket bag since they came back in style, and this Goody — which can be worn as a crossbody or a top-handle — is spacious enough to fit my essentials, as well as a book (my litmus test when I consider any handbag).” — Irina Grechko, Fashion Director

Veronica Beard The Goody Bag, $, available at Veronica Beard

Astrid & Miyu Pearl Charm Hoops

“I’ve had these earrings since they first dropped on A&M around three years ago — and they’ve stood the test of time. They aren’t tarnished or discolored, and I get them out for special occasions to wear with the matching necklace. I have two other A&M hoops that I alternate between, and I love them all because of the quality they offer for the price point.” — Tanyel Mustafa, Senior Writer

Astrid and Miyu Serenity Pearl Charm Hoops, $, available at Astrid and Miyu

Dr. Martens Black Gothic Americana Platform Monkstraps

“This shoe is so different from anything else I own right now. I like that it’s kind of a boot, kind of a loafer, and its gothic western detailing adds flair to any simple outfit. I’ll be wearing these with jeans and midi skirts for spring — just have to break them in with a bit of stomping around.” — Ebony-Renee Baker, Fashion Editor

Dr. Martens Black Gothic Americana Platform Monkstraps, $, available at SSENSE

Sweet Girl Floral Hair Scarf

“I’ve previously slept on headscarves but they are such a no-brainer way to inject character and joy into an otherwise monotonous look. I have been wearing this Anthropologie scarf on vacation and it looks so good with pigtails and hoop earrings. Thanks to the slim triangular shape, it stays put in my hair even without using bobby pins. The colorway I have is sold out, but I’ve linked to a similar version on Anthropologie with the same cut.” — Venus Wong, Senior Travel Writer

Heaven Mayhem Amour Gold Earrings

“Okay, so you wouldn’t have to say much more than Hailey Bieber is a fan of this brand to get me to pay attention BUT, as it turns out, their earring collection is cute AF. I love nothing more than a huge statement earring and these heart-shaped studs are exactly what I need to elevate my go-to slick back bun look.” — Alicia Lansom, Associate Editor

Heaven Mayhem Amour Gold Earrings, $, available at Heaven Mayhem

Dr. Martens Audrick Knee High Platform Boots

“Pain is gain, right? I won’t lie, these Dr. Martens boots wrecked my heels the first time I wore them — with three pairs of socks underneath! — but damn do they look good. (I’ve since worn them on an evening out with some padded backs I bought from Amazon to stick on the heels, and it’s been a massive help in making them more comfortable.) Go in prepared to have to break them in, and you’ll have a pair of boots you can wear in the early chilly spring with tights and skirts, through to warmer nights out with shorts.” — Tanyel Mustafa, Senior Writer

Circus NY by Sam Edelman Isadora Strap Sandal

“I’m a big fan of Sam Edelman’s Circus NY shoes. I already owned the brand’s Miranda platform sandal in a funky orange and pink swirl print. These chunky sandals are so much more lightweight and comfortable than they look, so I decided to go ahead and purchase my next pair: The Isadora sandal. I opted for this specific style in the metallic silver option because I needed it to double as a shoe that would fit an upcoming disco-themed party and could also be worn for an Olivia Rodrigo Y2K-inspired concert outfit. But I’m also always in need of a going-out shoe in the spring when it’s no longer suitable to slip on my favorite booties and when flat sandals are just too casual. While these are metallic, I truly think they’ll be so versatile and will easily dress up any spring outfit.” — Victoria Montalti, Associate Affiliate Writer
